Salsa music is the great denominator By Angel Ortiz Salsa music transcends and the Disc Jockeys are the messengers. From Bangkok to Boston, from New York to Norway, from Vancouver to Vietnam, Salsa music is everywhere. Introducing Nishi Naoto from Kyoto, Japan. Helping to continue in taking Salsa music around the globe Nishi, otherwise known as DJ Rodrigo, has put Kyoto firmly on the map of Salsa.
While owning and operating two nightclubs in Kyoto, he travels around Japan where each month he visits 6 cities organizing his salsa socials while playing the music the salseros love to hear and dance to. With endless energy and passion for Salsa music (in another life he says he would like to be Papo Luca –Sonora Poncena), Dj Rodrigo is on a mission. With 25 years as a DJ, a Salsa Dj since 2000, he wants to see Salsa envelope Japan. He feels the music is a “unifier” that brings all cultures together and creates harmony and peace even if it’s just for one night or one weekend. It was in the late 1990’s that Japan first started seeing major salsa events organized after being inspired by the first ever World Salsa Congress in Puerto Rico 1997. But those were mostly in Tokyo. Dj Rodrigo saw a void and a need to put Kyoto on the map and so his journey began. He thus created the Biannual Salsa Candela/Kyoto Salsa Festival. Twice a year in May and October, he invites local and international dance performances to a beautiful outdoor venue called Shin Puh Kan. Now running a few years in Kyoto, it’s successful and always supported by the locals and of course the dance community.
As you will read in the interview, Nishi says it all started for him with a simple request from a club-goer who said, “Why don’t you play salsa music since not many DJ’s play it?” That was the catalyst. A journey now spanning 11 years of playing salsa, covering 6 major cities each month organizing and playing at his socials, owning and operating 2 nightclubs, his b-annual event, and traveling around Asia and the U.S. Indeed, Nishi has found his groove. Oh, did I mention he’s Japanese?
