The art of highlighting and contouring....Hollywood’s best kept makeup secret!  Although the JLO's and Kim K's of the world have some of the best defined cheek bones pre-makeup, they also get assistance from the contour fairies. Hollywood, don’t be mad as I spill the beans.  It is my duty to show my Beauty Box Divas the way to this chiseled look everyone pines for.  

There are many ways one can define and sculpt their face.  The more savvy makeup guru may choose to use foundations while others can use powders, bronzers or even blushes.  Whatever your technique, your new and improved appearance will surely turn heads.  And let’s face it, people pay thousands at a plastic surgeons office to create this chic yet avant-garde style, but my way will only cost you $10 to $30.  Who can beat that!

I’m often asked in my makeup workshops, “how does one highlight & contour and what products should be used”?  Highlighting is a way to bring a feature forward that you want to stand out.  Some places that I highlight are the brown bones, cheek bones, or the center of the face.  I like to use colors that are 1 to 2 shades lighter than a person’s skin tone.  Also, depending on your level of expertise, you can use foundations or pigments (matte or shimmer) to shape and sculpt facial features.  (Tip:  Use minimal shimmer as you do not want to look like a disco ball.  The highlight area is just an accent.)

The opposite is true for contouring.  This technique is used to set parts of the face back such as a crease, jaw bone, or a high forehead.  Unlike the highlighting method, you want to use light or dark browns depending on your skin color.  But remember since you are using dark colors, avoid being heavy handed and always buff your colors together.  My motto is blend, blend, and more blending!  Nothing is worse than seeing contour lines.
