The Beauty Box BB Cream By Vanessa Gulino
The Asian community has embraced BB Cream as it makes up 13% of the entire cosmetic market in South Korea. It also has transcended into men skincare. US cosmetic companies took note of this ever growing trend and began incorporating BB Cream products to diversify their product line. But the question still remains “does this all-in-one product with so many functionalities really work?” And is it similar to our tinted moisturizer? One major difference with BB Cream is its whitening ingredients for the skin. Unlike western traditions where we are constantly trying to achieve darker skin tones, Asian communities prefer their skin to be porcelain like. Therefore there are limited skews mostly in a light hue. The concept of having one or two shades may not be favorable in our market where skin tones vary from light to dark. Tinted moisturizers, which have similar ingredients to BB Cream, come in variety of shades to match all skin tones, while giving moisture, SPF and minimal coverage. MAC Cosmetics launched the first BB Cream in North America in 2010. It is only sold in travel retail but will soon be hitting domestic stores in 2012.
MAC Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35 is a light-weight primer, with SPF 35, that color corrects, controls oil and is a sheer beige tint. Currently, MAC only offers one shade but will soon be expanding their colors to meet the growing demand. (retail $30) Garnier jumped on the band wagon and launched the first drug store BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector in light and medium color. (retail $12.99)
1. Hydrates for 24hrs Another product is Clinique’s Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30. It has sun block properties, great antioxidants for preventative care, and a tint for coverage to diminish imperfections. It also comes in 3 shades: 1. Very fair with pink undertones Options when shopping for your Beauty Box are always an advantage. Finding the right products and being knowledgeable will help your experience be a more effective and efficient one. Beauty is a luxury and we tend to impulse shop on color, texture or product promises through great marketing campaigns. BB Cream a fact or fiction….you be the judge!!

BB Cream, also known as beauty balm or beauty blemish, is the latest fad in makeup to hit the US market. What is BB Cream and should this product be a staple in one’s Beauty Box? This all in one product has been around for decades in Asian countries. Although very popular, BB Cream dates back to Germany, designed by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek in 1950, to protect patient’s skin recovering from plastic surgery and laser treatments. In 1980 it was later introduced in South Korea and Japan and became the secret beauty treatment for celebrity actresses. Its popularity for an all-in one product such as a moisturizer, primer, foundation, whitening properties, and most importantly a sun protector has become a growing trend in Beauty Boxes around the world. But can BB Cream crossover and be as effective in US markets?
